GitHub Actions basics
GitHub Actions are automations that run in response to repository events: push, pull request, schedule (cron), release. Each automation is defined in a YAML file in .github/workflows/. Claude can create and maintain these workflows for you.
name: CI
on: [push, pull_request]

test:
runs-on: ubuntu-latest
steps:
- uses: actions/checkout@v4
- uses: actions/setup-node@v4
with: { node-version: 20 }
- run: npm ci
- run: npm testIn one sentence: GitHub Actions = event-based automation, defined in YAML, that runs on GitHub.
Workflows with Claude
You can integrate Claude Code directly into CI. Anthropic offers an official GitHub Action (anthropic/claude-code-action) that runs Claude in response to PRs. It can review code, suggest fixes, and even implement changes automatically. It’s Claude as a team member in CI.
Use cases
Automatic review: Claude comments on each PR. Auto-fix: Claude fixes lint/formatting issues and commits. Triage: Claude categorizes issues and assigns labels.
In one sentence: Claude Code runs inside GitHub Actions for automatic review, fixes, and triage.
Automated tests in CI
The cornerstone of CI: run all tests on every push and block the merge if any fail. Claude can configure the test workflow, add matrix builds (testing across multiple Node/Python versions), and configure branch protection rules that require passing tests before the merge.
In one sentence: tests run on every push; merging only happens when everything is green.
Continuous deployment
After merging into main, deployment happens automatically. Platforms like Vercel, Railway, and Fly.io integrate natively with GitHub: push to main = automatic deployment. For custom setups, Claude creates a workflow that builds, tests, and deploys via SSH, Docker, or API.
In one sentence: merge into main = automatic deploy via webhook or custom GitHub Action.
Security scanning
CI security includes: Dependabot (updates vulnerable dependencies), CodeQL (static security analysis), and secret scanning (detects accidentally committed keys). Claude can configure all of this and also act as a security reviewer on every PR.
In one sentence: Dependabot + CodeQL + secret scanning = automated security in the pipeline.
Monitoring and alerts
The pipeline doesn't end at deploy. Configure failure notifications (Slack, email, Telegram), health checks that verify the service is responding, and automatic rollback if the health check fails after deploy. Claude can create a cron workflow that runs health checks and notifies you if there's a problem.
In one sentence: post-deploy monitoring ensures problems are detected and fixed before the user notices.
