When to Use
Trigger when the user says:
/finance fire- "Financial independence"
- "Retire early"
- "What's my FI number"
- "Coast FIRE", "Lean FIRE", "Fat FIRE", "Barista FIRE"
- "Years until FIRE"
- "Geographic arbitrage"
- "4% rule"
The Four Variants of FIRE
1. Lean FIRE
- Definition: FI with minimal spending (typically $25-40k/year)
- FI number: $625k - $1M (25x of $25-40k)
- Lifestyle: Frugal, often single or without children, low cost-of-living area
- Commitment: Less room for variable expenses, more lifestyle restrictions
2. Fat FIRE
- Definition: FI with comfortable to luxurious spending ($100-250k+/year)
- FI number: $2.5M - $6.25M+
- Lifestyle: Travel, hobbies, restaurants, premium healthcare
- Commitment: Takes much longer to reach; requires a high income or a long timeline
3. Coast FIRE
- Definition: Saved enough that, WITHOUT new contributions, compound growth reaches traditional FI by age 65
- Formula:
Número Coast FIRE = Número FI / (1+r)^anos_ate_aposentadoria_tradicional - Example: $1.5M FI at 65 / (1.07)^30 = $197k needed at age 35
- After Coast: Only enough to cover current expenses; optional contributions
- Commitment: Still working, but with enormous flexibility
4. Barista FIRE
- Definition: Part-time work covers ongoing expenses; the portfolio grows untouched OR provides partial income
- FI number: Often 50-70% of the traditional FI number
- Lifestyle: Part-time job (often for health benefits), portfolio supplements income
- Commitment: Still doing some work, but low-stress and by choice
Calculation Engine
FI Number Calculation
Número FI Tradicional = Gasto Anual × 25 (assume SWR de 4%)
FI Conservador = Gasto Anual × 28-33 (SWR de 3.0-3.5% para linha do tempo de 50+ anos)
FI Agressivo = Gasto Anual × 20-22 (SWR de 4.5-5% para linha do tempo mais curta)Years until FIRE (by Savings Rate)
The famous table (assumes a 5% real return, starting from $0):
| Savings Rate | Years until FIRE |
|---|---|
| 5% | 66 |
| 10% | 51 |
| 15% | 43 |
| 20% | 37 |
| 25% | 32 |
| 30% | 28 |
| 35% | 25 |
| 40% | 22 |
| 45% | 19 |
| 50% | 17 |
| 55% | 14.5 |
| 60% | 12.5 |
| 65% | 10.5 |
| 70% | 8.5 |
| 75% | 7 |
| 80% | 5.5 |
| 85% | 4 |
| 90% | 2.5 |
Insight: The savings rate is THE lever. Going from 10% → 50% reduces the time from 51 → 17 years.
Years to FIRE formula (with existing balance)
Anos = ln((FI - PV×(1-r)/PMT + PMT/r) / (PMT/r)) / ln(1+r)
Onde:
FI = alvo do número de FI
PV = carteira atual
PMT = poupança anual
r = taxa de retorno realCoast FIRE Calculation
Número Coast FIRE = Número FI Tradicional / (1 + r)^(idade_aposentadoria_tradicional - idade_atual)Use r = 5-7% real returns.
Geographic Arbitrage
Same income, lower cost of living = higher savings rate.
| Move From → To | Average Cost-of-Living Reduction | Increase in Savings Rate |
|---|---|---|
| SF/NYC → Austin/Raleigh | 30-40% | +15-20% |
| Austin → Tulsa/Knoxville | 20-30% | +10-15% |
| U.S. → Portugal/Mexico/Thailand | 40-60% | +20-30% (if income doesn't change) |
| Urban → Rural | 20-35% | +10-20% |
Sequence-of-Returns Risk
The first 5 years of retirement matter disproportionately. If the market drops 30% in year 1 and you withdraw 4%, you’ve effectively withdrawn 5.7% of the original amount — recovery is much harder.
Mitigation strategies:
- Bond tent: Keep 3-5 years of expenses in bonds/cash near retirement
- Cash cushion: 1-2 years of living expenses in HYSA
- Flexible expenses: Cut variable expenses in down years
- Safety Rails (Guyton-Klinger): Adjust withdrawals based on portfolio performance
- Part-time income: Even a small income (Barista FIRE) cushions downturns
Withdrawal Strategies
Strategy 1: The 4% Rule (Trinity Study)
- Withdraw 4% of the initial portfolio, increasing it by inflation each year
- 30-year success rate: ~95% (60/40 portfolio)
- 50-year success rate: ~85%
- Simple, well studied
Strategy 2: The 3.5% Rule (Early Retirement Adjustment)
- For retirements 50+ years away
- More conservative, higher success rate
- Adds $$ to the FI number (Annual × 28.5)
Strategy 3: Dynamic Withdrawal (as a % of the current portfolio)
- Withdraw a fixed percentage (e.g., 4%) of the CURRENT portfolio each year
- Never runs out, but income varies
- Recommendation: guardrails with a floor and ceiling
Strategy 4: Guyton-Klinger Guardrails
- Initial: 5% withdrawal
- If the portfolio falls 20% below the initial path → cut withdrawals by 10%
- If the portfolio rises 20% above the initial path → increase withdrawals by 10%
- Allows a higher upfront fee with a safety mechanism
Strategy 5: Bucket Strategy
- Bucket 1: 1-2 years in cash
- Bucket 2: 3-7 years in bonds
- Bucket 3: 8+ years in stocks
- Replenish stocks in good years, spend cash in bad years
