In the AIs: AEO, GEO, and sites used by agents
Getting cited by AIs doesn't call for a magic file. It calls for well-done SEO, content only you have, and honest measurement. In eight lessons you separate fundamentals from fads, read the official dashboards, measure citations by hand every month, fix your entity, check the bots in the log, and get your site ready for agents.

- 8short lessons
- 16exercises with "done when"
- 3free official dashboards
- 0API or paid tool
The lessons
In work order: separate the myth, measure in the dashboards and by hand, fix who you are for the AIs, check who reads your site, and get your site ready to be used by agents.
Lesson 1 · 16 minAEO and GEO without the myths: what's official and what's a fadAEO (optimizing for answer engines) and GEO (optimizing for generative AI) have become a package sold with a file, markup, and a promise. In May 2026, Google published a guide that takes much of that apart. This lesson uses that guide as a yardstick to decide where your time is worth spending.
Lesson 2 · 17 minOfficial dashboards: the Search Console AI report and Bing's AI PerformanceIn 2026, the first official, free dashboards on AI appeared: the Search Console generative AI report and Bing's AI Performance, now with the Topics Portfolio. Each one measures something different, and none measures everything. Knowing what each number is keeps you from drawing the wrong conclusion.
Lesson 3 · 18 minMeasure citations without an API: the frozen question batteryChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and Perplexity have no dashboard for the site owner. The honest way to measure is a repeated sample: the same questions, in the same AIs, every month, with a date. Because answers change with every run, you measure an appearance rate, not a snapshot.
Lesson 4 · 18 minName collision and outdated entity in the AIsSometimes the AI does answer about you, but about the wrong you: another company with the same name, or your story from ten years ago. The brand questions in the battery show this. The fix is to make clear, in text and in structured data, who you are, and to give the AIs sourced cards they can cite.
Lesson 5 · 18 minBing matters twice; the AI bots show up in the server logBing feeds Copilot and has the only official citations dashboard; and one study found a good share of ChatGPT's citations among the top Bing results. Telling Bing costs little. On the other side, the server log tells you who really reads the site: which AI bots, for what purpose, and which ones are fake.
Lesson 6 · 17 minAI readiness rubric and its caveatsAn AI readiness score helps you find what's broken, as long as you know how it's calculated. No score is official: each scanner picks its own criteria and weights. Here you compare two open INEMA rubrics, read what weighs most, and learn what the score does not prove.
Lesson 7 · 19 minFrom found to used: WebMCP as preparationSEO gets your site found; the next step is getting it used by an agent in the browser. WebMCP proposes that the page offer tools with a name, a description, and parameters. It's a W3C community draft, with no stable browser: it's worth preparing a test page, not rebuilding the site or promising rankings.
Lesson 8 · 18 minAgent commerce and the monthly measurement loopAgents already fill in forms and compare products by reading the page the way a screen reader does. What helps is the basics done well: semantic HTML, labels, correct product data. And none of it counts without a routine: a monthly loop with the dashboards, the battery, the log and the score, always with a date.
Who it's for
- 1Owners of sites or small businesses who want to show up when someone asks an AI about their topic.
- 2Marketing or SEO professionals who get requests for "GEO" and want to separate what has a source from what's a fad.
- 3Anyone who has already done the foundation (course 1) and wants to measure the effect in the AIs without paying for a tool.
What you'll be able to do
- 1Say, with sources, what Google, Bing, and the AI companies ask for and what nobody asks for.
- 2Read the Search Console AI report and Bing's AI Performance and build your baseline.
- 3Run a battery of frozen questions on 4 assistants by hand every month, with a spreadsheet.
- 4Fix name collisions, see in the log which bots read your site, and register the first WebMCP tool on a test page.
