Lesson 1 · 18 min

Why the agent overrates itself: a separate, skeptical evaluator

The agent that did the work is the worst judge of it: it writes "3 passed" without having run anything, or it finds the defect and talks itself into approving. In this lesson you separate the one who does from the one who checks: an evaluator that doesn't read the agent's report, runs the test on its own, and starts from the assumption that it's broken.

Start the lesson
Two workbenches separated by frosted glass: assembly on one side, inspection with a magnifying glass on the other.

In this lesson you will

  1. 1Why the agent's report doesn't count as proof
  2. 2The evaluator's package: diff, new files, and a test run from the outside
  3. 3Skeptical prompt: reject when in doubt and flag a defect in the verifier
  4. 4Evaluator with no tools using claude -p or codex exec read-only

Goal: separate the one who does from the one who checks: run an evaluator that doesn't read the agent's report, runs the test, and rejects what only looks done.

01The one who does doesn't check

Tap each block. The agent's report is left out on purpose.

Click each block in the diagram to see what it does.

Agreement between two models is not proof. What closes the cycle is the test, the acceptance criterion and, when a mistake is costly, a person.

02What has already been measured about agents grading themselves

Three facts, with sources. None of them is opinion.

1. Approves the mediocre

In the harness article for long-running apps, Anthropic reports that an agent evaluating its own work tends to praise mediocre work. The fix was to separate generator and evaluator.

The "out-of-the-box" evaluator was weak too: it found defects and then convinced itself they weren't serious, and it tested only on the surface.

03The kit and the evaluator prompt

Every script in the course lives in the repository's kit/ folder. Grab it once.

Terminal · get the kit
git clone https://github.com/inematds/loop-r-eng-verificacao-v72 ~/projetos/loop-r-eng-verificacao-v72
ls ~/projetos/loop-r-eng-verificacao-v72/kit
kit/prompt-avaliador.md (translation for reading; the file in the kit is in Portuguese)
# You are the EVALUATOR. You did not write this code and you do not trust whoever did.

Assume the work is broken until the evidence below proves otherwise.
You only have what is in this package: the diff, the new files and the output of the test run from outside.
There is no report from the agent here on purpose: what it said does not count.

Reject if any of these is true:
1. The test output does not show success (rc other than 0, "failed", "error").
2. There are skipped, deselected or deleted tests ("skipped", "deselected", removed test file).
3. The diff touches the judge: test files, conftest.py, pytest.ini, pyproject.toml, setup.cfg, tox.ini.
4. The code treats the inputs that appear in the tests as special cases (answer dictionary, if on a literal value).
5. The diff does not show the requested work, or does something outside the request.

If you think the test itself is wrong, do NOT approve: reject and write "DEFEITO NO VERIFICADOR:" with the evidence.
Found a problem? Look for one more before deciding. When in doubt, reject.

Answer exactly in this format, with nothing before it:
VEREDITO: APROVADO or VEREDITO: REPROVADO
- reason 1, with the diff or output snippet that proves it
- reason 2 (if any)

04Free rehearsal: the agent that lies

ensaio.sh builds a project with an unfinished slug() and 3 tests. agente-falso.sh imitates an agent without calling a model.

Terminal · two rounds
K=~/projetos/loop-r-eng-verificacao-v72/kit
bash $K/ensaio.sh
cd /tmp/ensaio-verif/proj

echo "implemente slug()" | $K/agente-falso.sh mente # A) the agent says it did it
$K/avaliar.sh .; echo "saída: $?"

$K/agente-falso.sh bom < /dev/null # B) the agent really does it
$K/avaliar.sh .; echo "saída: $?"
Example from the repository
pronto: /tmp/ensaio-verif/proj (testes escondidos em /tmp/ensaio-verif/escondidos)
Pronto: implementei slug() e rodei os testes: 3 passed.
teste rodado pelo avaliador: 3 failed in 0.01s (rc=1)
avaliador: REPROVADO (revisão em /tmp/avaliar-review.md)
RESULTADO: REPROVADO
saída: 1
Pronto: slug() implementado.
teste rodado pelo avaliador: 3 passed in 0.00s (rc=0)
avaliador: APROVADO (revisão em /tmp/avaliar-review.md)
RESULTADO: APROVADO
saída: 0

Round A's report says "3 passed"; the test run by the evaluator says "3 failed". The second one counts.

05The case a fixed rule doesn't catch

The chumba mode memorizes the answers to the 3 tests. The tests pass. The fake evaluator (fixed rules) approves; the real, skeptical one does not. This step uses your subscription quota: one call.

Terminal · fake and real (continues from the previous block)
bash $K/ensaio.sh > /dev/null && cd /tmp/ensaio-verif/proj
$K/agente-falso.sh chumba < /dev/null # memorizes the answers to the 3 tests
$K/avaliar.sh .; echo "saída: $?" # fake evaluator (fixed rules)

AVALIADOR_CMD='claude -p --tools ""' $K/avaliar.sh .; echo "saída: $?"
# or: AVALIADOR_CMD='codex exec -s read-only --skip-git-repo-check -' $K/avaliar.sh .
grep -c '^VEREDITO: ' /tmp/avaliar-review.md
Example from the repository
Pronto: 3 passed.
teste rodado pelo avaliador: 3 passed in 0.00s (rc=0)
avaliador: APROVADO (revisão em /tmp/avaliar-review.md)
RESULTADO: APROVADO
saída: 0
teste rodado pelo avaliador: 3 passed in 0.00s (rc=0)
avaliador: REPROVADO (revisão em /tmp/avaliar-review.md)
RESULTADO: REPROVADO
saída: 1
1

Claude Code 2.1.303, the subscription's default model, no tools (--tools ""). The verdict text changes on each run; the structure (a single VEREDITO line) does not.

06Practice

First the rehearsal, then a real evaluator on your repository.

E1 · The report doesn't pass

10 min

Get the kit and run the two rehearsal rounds.

Done when: round A ends with RESULTADO: REPROVADO and saída: 1; B with RESULTADO: APROVADO and saída: 0.

E2 · The real evaluator catches the chumbado one

10 min

Run the chumba mode block with the fake evaluator and then with AVALIADOR_CMD pointing to claude -p or codex exec read-only.

Done when: the fake one gives saída: 0, the real one gives RESULTADO: REPROVADO with saída: 1, and grep -c '^VEREDITO: ' /tmp/avaliar-review.md → 1.

E3 · On your repository

15 min

In a project of yours with tests, leave a change uncommitted (yours or an agent's) and run avaliar.sh with TESTE pointing to your test command and the real evaluator.

Done when: TESTE="[your test command]" AVALIADOR_CMD='claude -p --tools ""' $K/avaliar.sh . prints RESULTADO: and the exit code matches it (0 for APROVADO, 1 for REPROVADO).

07Lesson quiz

Question 1 of 4

Why doesn't avaliar.sh send the agent's report to the evaluator?skill

08In three sentences

SeparateWhoever did the work doesn't check it: another context, without the agent's report, without write tools.
The test rulesThe evaluator runs the test itself; an exit code other than 0 fails the run before any opinion.
SkepticalStart from "it's broken", fail when in doubt, and report a verifier defect instead of approving.
