Lesson 2 · 15 min

Two ears, one mouth

Listening seems like the easy part, and it is the rarest. This lesson separates three levels of listening, shows the talk ratio that changes the result, and teaches you to build rapport in a few minutes, without forced friendliness and without turning into someone else. Anyone who advises a company for months needs this from the very first minute.

Start the lesson
Adult man listening carefully in a work conversation, with his hand resting on a notebook.

In this lesson you will

  1. 1The talk ratio that decides the conversation
  2. 2The three levels of listening and how to move up one per conversation
  3. 3Rapport in two or three minutes, and when to stop
  4. 4The energy you give off while you read the client

Goal: listen on 3 levels, let the client take up most of the conversation, and build rapport in 2 or 3 minutes, without forcing it.

01The three levels of listening

From the most common to the rarest. Click each level.

Compare two conversations with the same content: in one you talk 80% of the time and leave with hypotheses; in the other the client talks 80% and you leave with facts they told you themselves.

The easiest level is the most frequent one. Moving up one layer per conversation already changes your month's results.

02How to recognize your level and move up

A test for level 1, three moves for level 2, and what level 3 picks up.

1. You are at level 1

You interrupt with "exactly!" before the sentence ends. Afterward you remember what you said, not what you heard. You ask the same questions in every conversation.

Honest test: when you hang up, write down from memory three sentences from the client, in their own words. If only what you said comes out, you stayed at level 1.

03Mirror the pace and manage your own energy

While you read the client, they are reading you.

1. Mirror, don't imitate

Fast, upbeat client: match the energy and keep your questions coming. Reserved client: lower your volume and stretch your pauses. Straight-to-the-point client: cut the small talk down to thirty seconds.

Manipulation test: if it would still make sense with the client knowing what you are doing, it is not manipulation.

Practice level 2 without spending a real conversation: the AI plays the difficult client.

Prompt · listening practice with a simulated client
You are going to simulate a client so I can practice listening. Rules:
ROLE: you are <owner of a mid-sized trucking company, busy and skeptical>. You have a real problem
with <describe in one line, e.g.: rework when checking orders>, but you will NOT hand it over
on a silver platter: answer briefly, mention symptoms and only go deeper if I ask a good question.
MY TASK: find the root problem and how much it costs, only by asking questions.
SIMULATION RULES:
- One line at a time. Never write my lines.
- If I propose a solution before understanding the problem, resist the way a real client would.
- If I ask two questions in the same message, answer only the second.
AT THE END (when I write "end"): step out of the role and give me a report with
(a) what the root problem was that I should have found,
(b) my questions that worked and why,
(c) the moments when I spoke when I should have waited,
(d) a score from 0 to 10 for my listening, and be tough.

05Practice

One real conversation and one practice session.

1 · Three verbatim phrases

10 min

In your next work conversation (sales or not), when you hang up, write from memory three phrases the other person said, in their own words, and estimate your share of the talking.

Done when: you have 3 phrases from the other person in quotes, with no paraphrasing, and a number for your share of the talking.

2 · Listening practice with AI

25 min

Run the simulated client prompt with the type of company you serve. Lead by only asking questions and write "end" when you think you've reached the root.

Done when: the final report points out at least 1 moment where you steamrolled; if it only had praise, you redid it asking for harshness.

06Quick quiz

4 questions. The explanation appears after your attempt.

Question 1 of 4

The client answered your light question with a short sentence and gave nothing back. What does that indicate?
