Waves, trust and niche

Every technology wave repeats the pattern: the new thing appears, few companies adopt it, and then comes a long gap in which most know they are behind. In that gap, the people who get paid are the ones who help others adopt safely. This lesson shows why trust comes before the big contract and how to pick a niche without getting stuck.

Start the lesson
A consultant talks with the owner of a building-materials store at the counter.

In this lesson you will

  1. 1Find the phase of the wave where the service provider wins
  2. 2Why the chatbot stopped being the best first sale
  3. 3The 4 steps of trust leading up to the big contract
  4. 4Pick a niche with 3 criteria and one positioning sentence

Goal: pick a niche using the 3 criteria (money, access to the decision-maker, real problem) and start with the easy yes that builds trust.

01The logic of waves

Four phases of every technology wave. Click each one.

The model is resilient (no inventory, no dependence on a platform), but it's neither passive nor fast: without new conversations every week, revenue stops.

It's not the most exciting phase: it's the most profitable one for service providers.

02The first sale has changed

The chat bot on the website was almost everyone's first sale. Why it's now just one piece.

1. The problem is still real

The website dumps information but doesn't answer the visitor's question. A long form, phone only, nobody answering after hours.

Open the websites of ten service companies in your city: most have nothing but a phone number.

03Trust comes before big contracts

A service is a promise, and a promise is only accepted by people who trust you. Four steps.

1. An easy yes

Something cheap enough to approve without a meeting or a committee.

If they have to ask for permission, you've already lost weeks.

04Niche: the three criteria

Staying in one sector makes the work compound: the same problems, vocabulary and objections keep coming back.

1. Is there money?

A business that operates on the edge will love your idea and won't buy it.

05Template to copy

The prompt settles the niche decision today, with the three criteria applied in a comparable way.

Prompt · choose the niche
You are my market analyst. I need to choose ONE niche to sell
trust services in AI: an audit of how the company uses AI,
operations diagnostic, review of what has already been built, and training.

My reality:
- Industries where I have worked or have contacts: <list>
- City or region where I can serve clients: <where>
- Industries that interest me, even without experience: <list>

Score each industry on these three criteria, from 1 to 5:
A) Has money: margin to pay for an outside service.
B) You can reach the decision-maker: the owner picks up, or there is a wall of approvals.
C) I can solve something real today, with what I already know, without studying for months.

Then give me:
1. The table with the scores and the total.
2. The winner, and why the others lost.
3. For the winner: the 5 most common operational pain points and where the company
is probably already using AI without knowing whether it can be trusted.
4. My sentence: "I help <who> to <result> without <the pain they fear>."
5. 10 questions I should be able to answer about this industry before the
first call, marking the ones I probably don't know.

Don't sugarcoat it. If no industry is any good, say so and suggest two better ones.

06Practice

Commit to the niche for at least one year: any less and referrals won't come.

1 · The niche table

25 min

Run the prompt with at least three industries. If the totals tie, the criteria were applied too loosely: redo it with more detail about each industry.

Done when: the table has a winner with a clear margin over the runner-up, and the positioning sentence fits in one breath, said out loud.

2 · The industry's 10 questions

30 min

Answer the 10 questions from item 5 in writing before you call any company. The ones you don't know become the week's homework.

Done when: the 10 questions are answered or marked as homework, with the source where you will get the answer.

07Quick quiz

4 questions. The explanation appears after your attempt.

Question 1 of 4

In which phase of the wave is the service provider paid best?
