The five energy signals

Every conversation carries information that isn't in the words. This lesson teaches you to read five concrete signals (voice, verbs, the way they tell it, resistance, and the speech of someone who has already decided) and what to do with each one the moment it shows up. Reading the other person starts with reading yourself.

Start the lesson
Consultant wearing headphones on a video call, eyes closed for a moment, focused on the client's voice.

In this lesson you will

  1. 1Why reacting on impulse costs the sale
  2. 2The five signals and what to do with each one
  3. 3Open resistance with a question, not with a defense
  4. 4Stop selling when they have already bought

Goal: read the voice, the verbs, the way they tell the story, the resistance, and the talk of someone who has already decided, and act when each signal shows up.

01The five signals

On their own, each one can mislead. Together, they almost never miss. Click each signal.

Before the five signals comes you: I notice what I feel → I choose what to do with it → I notice what they feel → I lead the relationship.

Excited voice with a weak verb: enthusiasm without commitment, urgency is missing. Restrained voice with a strong verb: a decision made quietly, agree on the date.

02The moment the signal appears

What to do about the signals that are easiest to miss.

1. Reacting costs a lot

A client may treat you badly for reasons that have nothing to do with you. If you answer in kind, it ends right there.

If you answer "I see, tell me more about that," you sometimes uncover a big problem hidden behind the rudeness.

Right after the conversation: from your notes to a reading of the five signals.

Prompt · conversation reading
You are my analyst of sales conversations. Below are MY NOTES from a
conversation I just had. Analyze them using five signals: (1) voice and pace, (2) commitment verbs —
should / need to / will try / will do, (3) story mode × solution mode,
(4) resistance patterns, (5) phrases from someone who has already decided.
NOTES:
<paste your notes here, with his phrases as literal as you can remember>
Deliver:
1. A signal-by-signal reading, quoting the phrase that supports each conclusion.
If there is no evidence for a signal, write "no evidence" — do not make it up.
2. What stage of the decision this person is probably in, and why.
3. Which gate is stuck: urgency, feasibility, trust, comparison or budget.
4. ONE single recommended action for the next contact, with the phrase ready to use.

04Practice

The five-minute habit and the reading it makes possible.

1 · Five minutes of literal phrases

5 min

Right after your next conversation, set aside five minutes to write down literal phrases, not impressions. "He said: we already tried this and burned money" is worth more than "he seemed resistant."

Done when: you have at least 5 client phrases in quotes and no line of impression without a phrase to back it up.

2 · Reading the five signals

15 min

Paste your notes into the reading prompt. Ignore any conclusion that comes without a quote.

Done when: every conclusion in the reading quotes one of your phrases, and you have 1 action with a ready phrase for the next contact.

05Quick quiz

4 questions. The explanation appears after your attempt.

Question 1 of 4

The client says: "once this is up and running, can we measure the results?" What should you do?
