Ethics and law: label, image and voice rights, model license

Before you publish, three questions: do viewers know it was made with AI? Is everything that appears in the film yours or authorized? What does the law where you are require today? The laws are still changing, so this lesson teaches the principle and gives each rule with its source and date.

Start the lesson
Dark desk under a lamp with a closed folder and a pen, a voice recorder, a clapperboard, and an external hard drive.

In this lesson you will

  1. 1Label what was made with AI in a way the audience can see
  2. 2Know what the invisible watermark solves and what it doesn't
  3. 3Check people, voices, brands, and music before publishing
  4. 4Read the model license and keep a record of what was generated

Goal: check your film before publishing: label, people and voices, brands, music, model license, and a record of what was generated.

01The check before publishing

Five questions, in this order. Click each one.

Click each block of the diagram to see what it does.

Laws and rules change: each one here comes with its source and date. What is not confirmed in an official source appears as reported.

02What the law and the cases teach (Oct/2026)

Principle first, rule with source and date after.

1. Visible label

In the European Union, Article 50 of the AI Act has applied since 08/02/2026: anyone who publishes a deepfake must add a visible or audible label. The Code of Practice on marking and labeling came out on 06/10/2026 and says a machine watermark alone is not enough.

For a clearly artistic or satirical work the requirement is milder. Outside the EU, a label is good practice, and many platforms have their own rules.

03Templates to copy

The checklist the page checks and a label text for the video description.

checklist.txt (template)
Label: <where and how the audience learns it was made with AI>
People: <who appears; real with permission, or fictional>
Voice: <whose each voice is; permission>
Brands: <any third-party brand, logo or character? which one and why>
Music: <origin of the score and the license>
Model: <generators used and the license of each>
Platform: <where you will publish and the label rule there>
Record: <where the prompts, references and dates are>
Label text (video description)
Video made with artificial intelligence. Characters and scenes are fictional; no real person was portrayed. Tools: <image, video and voice generators used>. Score: <origin and license>.

04Check your checklist

Paste the file (or upload the .txt). Test first with the example that passes and the example with errors.

checklist.txt

05Optional: check in the terminal

Only for people who already use a terminal. In the course folder downloaded from GitHub; for your own file, replace --exemplo with its name (checklist.txt).

Terminal (in the course folder)
python3 conferir.py etica --exemplo; echo "saída: $?"
python3 conferir.py etica --errado; echo "saída: $?"
Example from the repository
$ python3 conferir.py etica --exemplo; echo "saída: $?"
OK: checklist com 8 respostas
saída: 0

06Practice

The checklist for your film. The page checks that each item was answered; the right answer depends on your case.

Checklist · eight answers

20 min

Answer the eight items for your film, one per line. Paste it into "Check your checklist" and download checklist.txt to the project folder.

Done when: the page answers OK: checklist com 8 respostas and the checklist.txt is in the project folder.

Label · in the film and in the description

15 min

Adapt the template's label text to your film, put a short notice on screen in the last shot, and save the description text in the project folder as rotulo.txt.

Done when: the rotulo.txt is in the project folder and, when you play the film, the made-with-AI notice appears on screen in the last shot.

07Quick quiz

Five questions. The explanation appears after each answer.

Question 1 of 5

Since when has Article 50 of the AI Act (labeling) been in force in the European Union?

08To keep

A label you can seeOn screen or in the description. An invisible watermark helps, but it isn't enough.
Permission firstReal faces and voices only with written permission; third-party characters and brands, no.
A rule with a dateLaws change: cite the source and the date; what has not been confirmed goes in as reported.
