Lesson 7 · 15 min

News with its own page and a permanent archive

A news item that only exists as an entry in a list on the home page disappears when the list moves on, and the URL the search engine had already indexed goes with it. Every news item deserves its own address, news markup pointing to your brand, a body written only with facts from the source, and an archive that is never pruned.

Start the lesson
A person carefully pulls a bound volume of newspapers from an archive shelf.

In this lesson you will

  1. 1Why a list on the home page is not a page
  2. 2The NewsArticle template tied to your entity
  3. 3A body of 150 to 250 words with only facts from the source
  4. 4Permanent archive, and noindex when the source requires a login

Goal: publish news on its own URL with NewsArticle, a body with only facts from the source, and an archive that never deletes pages that are already indexed.

01From the news item to the archive

Tap each block.

Click each block in the diagram to see what it does.

The list is the showcase; the archive is the collection.

02Publishing a news item

Tap each step.

1. Address

Generate the address from a stable id, not from the position in the list. Same id in PT, EN, and ES, with reciprocal hreflang.

03The markup and body templates

prompt-texto-noticia.md (body against thin pages)
You write the body of a news item for non-expert readers.
News item: "<title>" — <summary>
Write 3 short paragraphs (150 to 250 words in total):
1) what it is; 2) what it's for / what changes for those who use it; 3) how to get started or what to watch for.
RULES: use ONLY facts from the SOURCE TEXT; do not invent numbers, dates, prices, names, or promises; simple
sentences, no clickbait, no "in this article". Then translate into English (en) and Spanish (es), keeping
product and brand names.
Reply ONLY with JSON: {"pt":["p1","p2","p3"],"en":["p1","p2","p3"],"es":["p1","p2","p3"]}

SOURCE TEXT:
<text extracted from the original page>
Archive rule (note)
News archive for <site>
- every published news item goes into <arquivo.json>; nothing is removed
- the home page shows the <N> most recent from the archive
- source with login or little text: page with noindex until it has a body
- body validation: 110 to 320 words; every number exists in the source; 3 paragraphs per language
Example from the repository

A title with one sentence is a thin page, and an indexed thin page weighs against the whole site (course 1, lesson 7). The 150-to-250-word body isn't filler: it's the useful summary, with only facts the source confirms.

04Practice: one news item from the template

Pick a real piece of news from your subject.

E1 · News item with NewsArticle

40 min

Write the body with the request template from the source, fill in the NewsArticle with your organization's @id, and publish it at its own URL.

Done when: the page returns 200, the schema.org validator shows the NewsArticle with no errors and the publisher pointing to your @id, and the body is 150 to 250 words.

E2 · Archive rule

15 min

Write your site's archive rule and check whether the home page prunes old pages.

Done when: the note says where the file lives, how many items the home page shows, and what happens to news items without an accessible source (noindex).

05Test what you learned

The explanation shows up after your answer.

Question 1 of 4

The home page shows the 20 most recent news items and deletes the older ones. What's the problem?skill

06Takeaways

Own URLOne per news item and per language.
NewsArticlePublisher by your brand's @id; source in isBasedOn.
ArchiveThe home page shows a few; the archive keeps them all.
